{"id":3368,"date":"2018-02-23T10:50:21","date_gmt":"2018-02-23T10:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/police.gov.gh\/en\/?p=3368"},"modified":"2018-02-23T12:40:04","modified_gmt":"2018-02-23T12:40:04","slug":"press-release-crime-alert-beware-of-merchandise-fraudsters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/police.gov.gh\/en\/index.php\/press-release-crime-alert-beware-of-merchandise-fraudsters\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Release: Crime  Alert \u2013 Beware of Merchandise Fraudsters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) brings to the notice of the public about the activities of some female-led fraud syndicate in the merchandise business.<\/p>\n<p>These fraudsters approach whole sellers\/retailers\/petty traders and bargain for products notably air conditioners, folding chairs, cooking oil, alcoholic beverages, and coffiee mates, after obtaining them from owners, bolt without paying for the goods.<\/p>\n<p>These syndicates operate around Tesano, Achimota, Airport, Adabraka, and other commercial places in some parts of Accra.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>MODUS OPERANDI<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They issue dud cheques unknowingly to customers after they have succeeded in collecting the goods.<\/li>\n<li>They may lead victims to a particular house as their own with the intent to win their victims confidence which later turns out not to be theirs.<\/li>\n<li>Enter a bank premises with victims under the pretext of cashing money to pay for the products but they will end up leaving victims to their fate in the bank.<\/li>\n<li>They may also ask victims to go with a member of the syndicates to pay for the goods in their non existing offices as others wait in a vehicle but leave victims on the way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>CAUTION<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The public are advised to take due diligence before handing over goods to any customer they deal with, in the course of their business transactions.<\/li>\n<li>Checks or other payment orders must be cross-checked with banks if possible, in order for it to be waiting for clearance before issuance of goods.<\/li>\n<li>Do background checks on prospective business partners to know their identity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Commercial Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department has arrested one female suspect believed to be the leader of the syndicate for her alleged involvement in multiple fraud cases in a similar modus.<\/p>\n<p>The public especially those who have fallen victim of these fraudsters in a similar manner should come to the Commercial Crime Unit (CCU)\/CID Headquarters to identify a middle aged woman, suspect Mary Sewaa Afedzi who also operates in the name Rosemary Amoah, Araba, Cotton One.\u00a0 She operates with four others who had gone into hiding.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the other four suspects should report to the nearest police station or contact the <strong>Chief Supt\/Commercial Crime Unit at the CID Headquarters<\/strong> on mobile phone number <strong>0244313383 <\/strong>or call Police information room on the following numbers <strong>0302773906<\/strong>, <strong>0302787373<\/strong> or Police Command Centre number <strong>191 (all networks), 18555 (on Vodafone and MTN short code).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>SGND<\/p>\n<p><strong>[OLIVIA TURKSON]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF POLICE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0PRO \/CID HEADQUARTERS<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) brings to the notice of the public about the activities of some female-led fraud syndicate in the merchandise business.
