MARINE PORTS & RAILWAYS

The Ghana Police Marine Unit is a specialized component of the Ghana Police Service which existed as far back as 1916. It was then known as Water Police and was disbanded in 1942 and handed to the Customs, Exercise and Preventive Service. The Unit was re-established in April 2011 in line with the exigencies of the Service.

The re-birth was in partial fulfillment of the security master plan for the Oil and Gas Industry in Ghana and officially inaugurated in June 2013. The Unit was merged with the Railways and Ports in line with Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I.76) to become one of the departments of the Ghana Police Service.

 

The Ghana Police Marine Unit currently have 60 core Mariners, made up of both skippers, operations/driver, boat mechanics, intelligence officers, swimmers and rescue swimmers. The Unit has two Commands, Eastern Marine and Western Marine Commands in Tema and Takoradi respectively with its Headquarters in Takoradi.

 

At both Eastern and Western Commands, the department has the following Police Stations under them

 

WESTERN COMMAND TAKORADI

  • Administrative Headquarters
  • Fishing Harbour Police Station
  • Aiyinase Police Training School
  • Joe Warf Police Station

 

EASTERN COMMAND/TEMA

  • Administrative Headquarters
  • Fishing Harbour Police Station
  • Fishing Harbour Police Post
  • Ada Marine Police Post

 

The Tema Unit is headed by Supt. Joseph Antwi Ababio and the Takoradi Unit is also headed by C/Supt .Samuel Owusu Berko
