INTERPOL

Ghana joined INTERPOL in 1958 and operated its National Central Bureau (NCB) in Accra. NCB Accra or INTERPOL Accra is a unit of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service with staff strength of Seventeen (17) comprising Police Officers of different ranks. It is headed by a Director who has a Deputy. Its core functions include the following:

  • Extradition and deportation of fugitives
  • Training of Officers of all ranks in collaboration with the INTERPOL General Secretariat and the Regional Bureau
  • Cooperate with INTERPOL General Secretariat and other National Central Bureaus on issues related to crime fighting and prevention.

Collaboration with the other Law Enforcement Agencies in the Fight Against Crime

NCB Accra works in close collaboration with other law enforcement agencies in Ghana like the Customs Division of the Ghana revenue Authority, Ghana Immigration Service, National Security and the Bureau for National Investigations by providing INTERPOL tools and services to them to help in the fight against crime. The Unit also serves as a liaison between Ghana and other INTERPOL member countries in matters of International Police Cooperation.

Public Education | Advice

The INTERPOL Unit checks the status of vehicles for members of the pubic who wish to purchase vehicles imported from abroad to ensure that the vehicles are not stolen from their countries of origin.

Members of the public who are robbed of their vehicles may also report to the Unit for the particulars of the vehicle (Chassis number, make, model, etc.) to be fed into the INTERPOL database on Stolen Motor Vehicles. This could help in location the vehicles in case they are outside the country.
